When my mom passed in 2015 I inherited these clowns! Frodo is a Goffin Cockatoo he is in his late 20’s , early 30’s . Gandolf the African Gray is about 23 years old.
I have put them thru alot since then! I loaded them up in dog carriers and moved them to Florida.
Then a year later I put them in travel cages and drove back to NY for the summer!
We did that 1 more time and then I got a brainstorm to buy a RV and sell everything I had to travel the country full time. One thing I learned is that life is too short, do the things you want before it is too late. Mom always wanted to travel more however she was always concerned with leaving the birds for too long! I knew from our earlier travels that Gandolf and Frodo were pretty good travelers. There were concerns, would they be ok in smaller cages? I didn’t have enough room for their big cages. So I chose would I be able to give them enough out of cage time to make up for it and would I be able to keep them warm enough? It has been a year and five months now and they have been across country 3 times now !!
they have visited friends and family all over the country! They have been to the Rubber Tramp Roundevous in Arizona. They have been on the shores of Lake powell in Utah, Hung out with the hummingbirds in Colorado and recently in the forest in Oregon! We have had some bumps in the road and a few emergency visits to the vets. Thankfully nothing serious and we are still on the move.Gandolf is talking up a storm and constantly scaring the dog with the smoke alarm sound! His newest words are rain go away! Frodo is flying around the rig comfortably and letting me hold and pet him more. He is also more comfortable hanging out on the rope perch that goes across the RV. After a year of doing the limbo under it,he finally decided that it is a pretty nice place to hang out! We have no plans to stop living this lifestyle anytime soon! Hi Donna, I’m in the planning stage of going full time. I also have 2 birds. My biggest worry is the fumes that come from the propane, stove, generator, etc. I would hate if they became I’ll or worse. How do you deal with it? Thank you and safe travels, Zena

All of that was a big fear of mine as well! I didn’t use my propane , stove or fridge for the first 6 mths of travel due to that fear. I even bought a thing that goes on the generator pipe to move the fumes away from the rig. ( I never used it!) None of it is a problem! when I cook I make sure to keep a window cracked and of course never use Teflon pans!! I have not used my oven only because it has never been used and new stoves have a Teflon like coating that needs to be burned off. so until I can get the birds out for a few hrs I won’t use that! when the generator is running I make sure to close windows so fumes don’t get blown in the windows. I would run the heater a bit also before bringing the birds in. specially if it is a new rig. Oh and also when I cook I keep a small fan by the sink to blow any smoke out the window cause the smoke detector is right there and is very sensitive and then Gandolf will spend days making the smoke detector sound!! 1 year 5 mths and we are all still going strong!! good luck with your planning !
