My whole first year on the road I knew the time would come that I would have to start working. However I didn’t want to think much about it because, well I was just so excited about traveling and seeing different places. I knew a blog would take at least a year to really work but I just couldn’t bring myself to settle down and start it! I did manage to sell a little ebay but in the long run I just couldn’t keep up with posting new items nor did I have the room to buy new items to sell along the way. In January I checked out the job options at the big white tent however I was still not ready to settle down for 3 to 6 mths to work, there was more I wanted to see this year. The plan was to workcamp next summer! But that was not gonna be enough I was gonna have to find a way to make some money while on the road now.
I tried things like Appen and Flexwork and while they are both great programs you really need to have a degree for most of their work and some sort of experience which I had neither! That is when I signed up for Rover. I figured it could not hurt to try and pet sitting was one way I made extra money when I lived in a sticks and bricks home anyway. The plan was as I moved I would just change my location on the app and hope to get gigs in each location. Rover has several different options for pet owners. Dog walkers, drop in visits , Pet sitters in your home or theirs and doggy day care in your home. In my head I wanted to really work for other rv’ers , other travelers who wanted to go sightseeing but couldn’t bring their pets with them . I figured they would understand my traveling self and get it.
My first bite at a job did not work out. I tease that they were not my people. We just didn’t connect at all and that is ok. I did not have another job offer for well over a month and pretty much just figured it was not gonna work. Then finally about the time we were gonna leave the area we were in I got a job! And it was people traveling in a RV who wanted to go out for the day but needed someone to stay with their dogs! It was perfect! I did need to travel a little further than I would of liked but it was just perfect! They were my people lol I hope to be able to help them out again at some point. After that nothing , nothing for weeks! We were moving pretty fast and any offers I was getting was just not working for our schedule! I realized then that I was that last minute girl! I couldn’t always sign up for a job that was booked 3 weeks in advanced. I need now jobs to make it work .
When we got to the Yosemite area several days later I got another call. This time to just dog sit a few hrs so the owners could go out to dinner. They were staying at the Tenaya Lodge right out side of the park and while the lodge is dog friendly they could not be left alone in the rooms at all! While the job was not gonna pay any bills I knew the more jobs I except the more jobs will start coming my way! And that did happen but they too just didn’t work out. They too were bookings for months in advanced and the weather and lack of boondocking in the area did not allow me to stay there.
Now mths later we are in another National Forest and I ended up with two jobs in the same area the almost same time frame. It is a win win situation while I did have to stay in this area a little longer than planned to make it work. I am currently sitting in a beautiful cabin in the forest listening to the river outside while I visit with Maggie and shelly the cats. I will visit them twice a day for the next 4 days as well as pet sit at another beautiful cabin a few miles away. It has all worked out perfectly for this week !! Still trying to perfect this thing but any money coming in is good !
